Rosenau was the first collection for Bolier & Co – and as such personifies the company’s dedication to a modernist view of classic forms. The name Rosenau comes from the Vienese Schloss Rosenau which has a wonderful collection of original Biedermeier furniture, from which this collection takes its inspiration.
Biedermeier furniture was particularly developed from Directoire style in the early 19th Century as a visual resolution to the differences of Classicism and Romantism. It softened the rigidity of Empire, with the best pieces showing remarkable simplicity, sophistication and functionality.

It is easy to see how this inspiration has been made relevant to the 21st century by Michael Vanderbyl. More usually known for highly contemporary ranges (such as Domicile by Bolier), he has with Rosenau created a range where the gently curved form of leg lifts the simplicity of form, where the rich beauty of the finish is enlivened by small touches of reflective metal.
As an internationally respected multidisciplinary designer (working with other furniture companies such as Baker, HBF and Maguire as well as graphics and interiors) the close relationship between designer and maker is what gives this collection its functional strength. Rather than simplifying designs to meet a manufacturer’s capabilities, Vanderbyl was able to design freely with the knowledge that Decca’s craftsmen would be able to produce both the intricate and clean lines of his designs.
Rosenau Sideboard (55006)
Details such as the pull out server trays on this classic buffet are part of the original focus on lightness, utilitarianism within an individuality of elegance.
Swirl Mahogany Veneer
The traditional Rosenau collection is featured with a swirl mahogany veneer. This veneer was chosen to bring out the classical aspects of the pieces, while still delivering a level of warmth and style that would be appreciated by a fresh and sophisticated market. Stainless steel is also incorporated into the collection to bring harmony and balance to the traditional swirl mahogany.
Rosenau King Size Bed (56003)
A good example of the collection is the 56002 sleigh bed, which features sawtooth detailing along the rails, whilst showing the beauty of the mahogany on the head and foot boards. Such details fit well into the Decca manufacturing expertise, with beautiful veneer matching and labour intensive carving melding to create a harmoniously simple outline.
As design trends grow and change, it is important for the Bolier designs to adapt and continue to appeal to a multitude of clients and designers. With this in mind, Farbé was born. Rosenau is reimagined in gloss white lacquer, giving a fresh and lighter spin on what was once a warm and traditional collection of furniture.
Rosenau King Panel Bed with Posts Farbé Finish (56021)
The Farbé collection is catching the eye of many designers, due to the lightness of form in such items as this Four Poster Bed. In other offerings the white furniture is heavy or overly ornamented, whilst in the Farbé finish this collection is simplistic, attracting the eye without calling for attention. Particularly in a bedroom setting, these bright and glossy pieces offer a breath of fresh air.

White lacquer is contemporary, young, and modern. The original classic and elegant forms of Rosenau live well in this simplicity. Design trends are now gearing towards minimalism, clean lines, and bright spaces that offer a sense of tranquility. Farbé meets these design trends and expectations by offering a collection of furniture that places emphasis on the grace of the form, but in a more subtle way.
